The New Year is just about upon us, so what better time for you to start thinking about scheduling a service appointment for your vehicle? There are some maintenance tasks that should be performed at least annually (and some more frequently than that), so as we turn over the calendar to 2020, it’s as good a time as any for you to get on track with your preventative maintenance.
Here’s a quick example of an ideal schedule for routine maintenance in Port Charlotte, FL.
Check every month
Certain parts of your vehicle should be checked frequently, on a nearly monthly basis. These include the following:
- The check engine light (if it’s on, check why)
- The cleanliness of the interior and exterior of your vehicle (clean as necessary)
- The function of all of your interior and exterior lights
- Your tire inflation level, tread and general wear and tear
- Windshield washer fluid
Check every three months or 3,000 miles
Every three months, you should check all of the above systems, as well as the following:
- Automatic transmission fluid
- The condition of the battery and all attached cables
- The condition of all belts and hoses
- The engine oil and oil filter
- Your vehicle’s exhaust
- The fuel filter
- Power steering fluid
Check every six months or 6,000 miles
Every six months or 6,000 miles you should add the following systems and issues to all of the above checks you need to make:
- Chassis lubrication
- The polish of your vehicle
- The engine air filter
- Your windshield wiper blades
Check every 12 months or 12,000 miles
Once each year, you should check all of the following issues and parts, in addition to everything we’ve already listed:
- The brakes and all brake components, including brake pads, rotors, drum, etc.
- The cabin air filter
- Your steering column and suspension
The good news is that it’s become easier than ever before to stick to a scheduled maintenance routine. You can book appointments with your service provider months in advance. Your vehicle itself will feature a “maintenance required” log at certain intervals, including if your oil life dips to a certain level. There are also smartphone apps available that will allow you to stay up to date with the condition of your vehicle’s systems, when you last received maintenance, what was worked on and what types of maintenance you will be due for in the future. These apps will alert you when you need to bring your vehicle in for maintenance.
As you’re considering what types of resolutions you will make for the new year, we strongly encourage you to make vehicle maintenance a priority. You’ve put a lot of money into the purchase of your vehicle, so it only makes sense that you’ll want to do everything you can to keep it running well for many years to come, while also protecting your own safety.
